The Commoner
June 2010

|
A big welcome to Geoff and Jennifer Creek who have moved into Hinksmoor House. We won’t say farewell to Kim and Al who have moved to Bromyard, because we know they’ll still be around the Common.
We mourn the death of Gwynfa Margaret Owen of Upper Brockhall.
Thanks to Graham Chapman and Morgans for printing the Commoner. Don’t forget to visit Bringsty cafe (and shortly the antiques centre) where you can indulge yourself with an all-day breakfast or tea and home-made cakes in the afternoon.
Some dates for your diary:

Hope to see you at The Big Lunch,

After a winter that seemed to go on forever, it’s nice to have a bit of sun. Let’s hope we don’t have too much of the wet stuff this summer. We have had house martins building a des res on the corner of the house this year. It has been a pleasure to watch them build where they like with no planning permission required!
Bracken
The winter has managed the bracken for us this year with a much slower growth and not too thick. The bluebells certainly took advantage and gave us a real spring show this year.
We have changed the way we will manage the bracken. Instead of a rotational plan of control we will have a yearly assessment of what needs to be done. We started this in May with a walk around the common with Nick Williams (Butterfly Conservation) Dagmar Lewis (Natural England) Liz Shimmin (Butterfly Recorder for BCMC), Derek Brookes and myself.
It was agreed that we will be cutting smaller areas rather than large blocks and target areas that really do need attention. We would like to try cut and blow rather than using a flail. Does anyone know where we might find one of the old type of machines that used to be used in the 70’s which we could borrow or hire? We want to see if it avoids a thick mulch which the flail tends to give us.
We plan to start cutting in the middle of August which will be clear of the bird nesting season. Hopefully we will avoid the snakes.
During the walk round it was felt that the fire breaks should be wider and managed so as to encourage wild flower growth. We have yet to establish a cutting regime for this. The existing fire breaks will be cut as usual.
Fruit trees
The fruit tree project is well underway and it is down to me to submit a plan to Natural England for their approval and funding.
Ponds
I would like to welcome Paul Dawson onto the BCMC committee; he has very kindly offered to move us forward on developing ponds/scrapes to encourage more invertebrates on the common.
Natural England have requested that we undertake an invertebrate study of the common. I would like the study to include the private ponds on the common. Any resident who would like to participate should please contact any of the committee members.
Orienteering
We have been contacted by Brian Hughes on behalf of Harlequins Orienteering Club, asking permission to use Bringsty Common for a run across the common every other year during the winter. No event will take place without prior permission and consultation with BCMC. Brian assures us that the course runners will avoid any property boundaries and sensitive wildlife areas will be marked out of bounds. Brian will be on the common drawing a very detailed map of the whole common and property boundaries.
I have asked Brian for a contribution to charity. I have suggested we donate to the Air Ambulance, given our rural location and the possible difficulty of normal medical help getting to an emergency.
Football pitch
I attended a Community Initiative Fund event. This follows our successful bid for funding from the West Mercia Police to protect the football pitch from anti-social four wheel drivers gouging up the pitch and spoiling other people’s pleasure.

Paul with Superintendent Kevin Purcell and Cllr Bernard Hunt
The football pitch will be used through the summer by a team from Worcester. I have asked Rob Rich the manager to remind the footballers that the pitch is in a quiet rural setting and swearing is not acceptable; if we start receiving complaints about unreasonable behaviour then they will not be able to use our pitch. Rob and his team will pay for the grass to be cut and white line the pitch. He has also asked if they can tidy up the pavilion. If all goes well with a joint effort from the footballers and BCMC, we might well have the pavilion brought back to its former glory. I see this as a win win solution to maintain a recreational area on our common with little or no cost to the BCMC.
Have a good summer, Paul. |

Does the sun always shine in an English Summer?
For those Commoners that made the great effort to join in with last year’s Big Lunch the answer is definitely not! We had so many heavy showers that we ended up in the Live and Let Live, gently steaming, with damp picnics a tribute to our community spirit.
So, ever the optimists, we won’t let one damp lunch spoil this years attempt to get as many Commoners together as we can to share in a Big Lunch, some silly sports and games, a chance to chat to old friends and hopefully meet some of our new neighbours that have recently moved onto the Common.
Bring your own food and drink along to the Football Pitch from 12.30pm onwards on Sunday, 18th July. Rugs, chairs, Sunday papers, sunscreen and umbrellas may be useful too. No fires or barbeques allowed and any dogs have to be well controlled with all that food about!
To find out more about the national campaign for the Big Lunch, please log onto www.thebiglunch.com
It would be useful to know approximate numbers so please let Stephanie know on stephanie.rowanfield@btinternet.com or 01886 822006 if you intend to join in.
See you there in the sunshine!!

We are lucky that we can walk anywhere on the common except through private gardens. In addition to this general right of access, there is also a public right of way cutting through the common between the track nearest Worcester and Foxhalls. This is in fact quite difficult to find, but we have agreed a route which pretty well sticks to the line shown on the definitive map and can be walked easily (with a small bit of clearance work). We will be shortly waymarking this route. |

An Early Bird Walk
Carol Friend Getting up before daybreak for the bird walk organised by Tom and Jennifer Weale we met at the Live car park at 05:30 in time for the dawn chorus.
On the walk we listened to and had identified by Tom the various bird song, enjoying birds singing but being no expert this was very informative. I now know the difference between Warblers and Blackbirds (I think). I also discovered among other things that green woodpeckers do not tap.
After a very good walk round we went back to the Live where an excellent breakfast was put on by Sue. At this point Paul whispered to me, “I hope there is not going to be a test”!
A very enjoyable walk with many thanks to Tom and Jennifer.
And now here’s the official version from Tom and Jennifer Weale Species found were as follows: -

Comment The weather resulted in us finding fewer species than hoped but nevertheless we were treated to wonderful singing by the warblers, at their best early in the morning at this time of year. This gave us the chance to compare their songs and distinguish one from the others. Garden warblers, chiffchaffs, and willow warblers were present in large numbers. Dr. Terry Foxton, an experienced birder from Hereford, who accompanied us, said that he had never before come across such a large number of garden warblers in one place.
